SERVICES

Because UB activities are paid for by tax dollars, Upward Bound scholars give back to the community through volunteer work. UB sponsors at least one volunteer activity per semester and various volunteer activities in the summer.

Throughout the year, UB sponsors trips to various Texas colleges so that scholars will be able to find out first-hand what specific colleges have to offer.  Scholars are required to attend at least two college visits per year. (Senior scholars are exempt.)

Individualized College Visit

Visiting a college campus is extremely important to making the right decision on which college to attend.  Upward Bound will assist scholars in planning for their individualized college visit. The visit will be at the college that the senior has been admitted to and plans to attend.  A campus tour and appointments with admissions, financial aid and academic advisors will be arranged.

  • Tutoring

We offer multiple free services to our Upward Bound Scholars to not only benefit them academically, but holistically as an individual as well. Some of the services that we offer our scholars are the following:

Here at Upward Bound, we strive to provide our scholars with different opportunities to attend various types of cultural enrichment activities. Scholars have visited numerous museums such as the Bob Bullock Museum, The Contemporary Austin Art Museum at Laguna Gloria and the Jones Center as well.

Along with the different museums, our scholars are able to attend other cultural enrichment activities such SU Native’s Annual Powwow. The Powwow is a great experience that allows different tribes to come together from all over the country to share some of their culture with the public. The SU Powwow enables the public to be educated about the multitude of tribes that attend every year.

Scholars are also able to attend Southwestern University’s The Roy and Margaret Shilling Lecture Series. The series brings prominent speakers to campus to talk about different topics, speakers such as Jane Goodall.

LIFE LONG LEARING

Every other Saturday, UB scholars are required to attend academic classes in writing, college preparation, enrichment and SAT/ACT prep on the Southwestern University campus from 8:45-1:15pm. During the Academic year, our scholars partake in a year long SAT/ACT preparation class. In addition, UB provides a college information seminar that includes: career exploration, college admission information, financial aid and scholarship information, and precollege planning.

UB staff meets with scholars on a weekly basis at their school or at the UB office to review grades and discuss academic progress. UB staff also help with high school course selection, SAT/ACT registration, college/financial aid applications, and any other academic questions.

If scholars have below a C in their class then they will be required to attend tutoring. Tutoring is available at the high schools with teachers and at the UB Office with Southwestern University Students Tuesday-Thursday from 4:30-6:30pm.
